Too young to be diagnosed with Asthma?
Lung function tests and respiratory assessments are generally not performed on children under 5 as they may not have the coordination required to undertake these tests. However, whilst many families may have been told asthma is not diagnosed in under 5s, this is now outdated advice and a diagnosis can be reached if there are strong suspicions.
Each child is different, and some younger children are able to carry out components of the lung testing. If you wish to discuss a paediatric asthma assessment, please do get in touch for further information.

FAQ: Respiratory Assessments
Have questions about our respiratory services, appointments, or treatments? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get the information you need.
What is a respiratory assessment?
A respiratory assessment is a thorough evaluation of your lung and breathing health. It typically includes a combination of physical examinations, medical history reviews, and diagnostic tests to identify any underlying respiratory conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, or other lung diseases.
Why might I need a respiratory assessment?
You may need a respiratory assessment if you experience symptoms like persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, or frequent respiratory infections. If you have a history of smoking, exposure to pollutants, or have a family history of lung diseases, a respiratory assessment can help identify any potential concerns early.
What tests are involved in a respiratory assessment?
A respiratory assessment may include several tests, such as a spirometry test to measure lung function, peak flow measurement to assess airflow, exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) tests to look at the level of inflammation, chest X-ray to detect abnormalities in the lungs, and blood tests to check signs of infection. Your clinician may also listen to your lungs using a stethoscope to detect abnormal sounds or signs of respiratory distress.
Can respiratory assessments help with conditions like asthma or COPD?
Yes, respiratory assessments are essential for diagnosing and managing conditions such as asthma and COPD. By measuring lung function and identifying symptoms early, we can develop a personalised treatment plan to control symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and improve your quality of life.
How long does a respiratory assessment take?
A typical respiratory assessment takes around an hour, depending on the complexity of your symptoms and the tests required. You will have the opportunity to discuss your symptoms, undergo diagnostic tests, and receive tailored advice from your clinician regarding any necessary treatment or lifestyle changes.
Do I need to prepare for a respiratory assessment?
Generally, there is no special preparation required for a respiratory assessment. However, it's helpful to bring details about your medical history, current medications, and any symptoms you've been experiencing. If you're being tested for conditions like asthma or COPD, you may be asked to refrain from using certain inhalers before specific tests. Please note, it is generally not recommended to undertake lung function tests within 6-8 weeks of a recent infection.
What conditions can a respiratory assessment diagnose?
A respiratory assessment can diagnose a range of conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, sleep apnoea, and lung infections. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management and treatment of these conditions.
What happens after a respiratory assessment?
After your respiratory assessment, your clinician will discuss the results with you and explain any diagnoses or concerns. If a condition is identified, they will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs, which may include medications, lifestyle changes, or referrals to specialists. Regular follow-ups may also be recommended to monitor your condition.
