Steve Frampton
ENT Consultant
Hi, I’m Steve Frampton, an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Consultant working in collaboration with the team at Dr Helen Allergy, and also in the NHS at University Hospitals Dorset (Poole & Bournemouth) since 2019. I have a broad experience in adult and children’s ENT conditions, both allergic and non-allergic, and have a subspecialist interest in Paediatric ENT. Following my medical training at Cambridge University and clinical training in London teaching hospitals, I undertook my Specialist ENT training in Wessex before completing a PhD at the University of Southampton and an international fellowship in Paediatric ENT at the internationally-renowned Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. I am clinical lead for Paediatric ENT at University Hospitals Dorset and work closely alongside the Paediatric and Neonatal teams locally, putting children at the heart of the service we deliver. I am also Chair of the Thames Valley & Wessex Operational Delivery Network, promoting improvements in the delivery of Paediatric ENT across our region. I look forward to meeting you at the Ringwood clinic in due course!
ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) FAQs
Have questions about our private ENT specialist services, appointments, or treatments? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get the information you need.
What is ENT, and why is it important?
ENT stands for Ear, Nose, and Throat, which are interconnected parts of the body. ENT specialists focus on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect these areas, including hearing problems, sinus issues, sore throats, nasal congestion, and balance disorders. Since these areas are crucial for communication, breathing, and balance, early intervention can improve quality of life and prevent long-term complications.
What types of conditions do ENT specialists treat?
ENT Specialists manage a wide range of conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, neck and skin. This includes ear infections, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), sinusitis, nasal congestion, sore throats, allergies, sleep apnoea, voice disorders, and conditions related to the tonsils and adenoids. They also address balance issues, such as vertigo, and perform procedures related to the upper respiratory tract, head and neck. If you are unsure if our service is the correct one for you please contact our team for clarification.
When should I see an ENT specialist?
You should see an ENT specialist if you experience persistent or severe symptoms related to your ears, nose, or throat, such as chronic ear infections, hearing loss, frequent sore throats, sinus congestion, or balance problems. If over-the-counter treatments are ineffective or symptoms worsen over time, it’s important to seek professional evaluation.
What tests do ENT specialists perform?
ENT Specialists may perform various diagnostic tests, depending on your symptoms. These may be on-site, such as nasendoscopy, otoscopy, blood tests or allergy testing, or following referral to one of our trusted providers eg for audiology, ultrasound or scans (eg CT/MRI). These tests help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and guide treatment decisions.
How are ear infections treated?
Treatment for ear infections depends on a number of factors including age, the type and severity of infection and this would be discussed at your appointment. Sometimes lifestyle changes or specific exercises can be effective, and in other cases early intervention with certain over the counter treatments can prevent deterioration and the requirement for antibiotics. Sometimes surgical intervention may be recommended.
Can ENT specialists help with snoring or sleep apnoea?
What are the treatments for sinus problems?
A detailed consultation will allow us to best understand the issues experienced and the best recommendations for management. Not all pains in the face are caused by sinus problems, and for those that are, understanding the factors causing the sinuses to not drain effectively is key to planning appropriate treatment. Many patients can be well managed with the use of salt water nasal treatment, with/without additional drug therapy, but for some surgery on the nasal passageways and/or sinuses may be recommended.
Can an ENT specialist help with hearing loss or tinnitus?
Most patients will require a hearing test to inform their clinical consultation and you would be referred to an Audiology provider for this. ENT specialists can provide advice on any investigations to look for causes of the symptoms given the pattern of tinnitus or hearing loss and its progression over time, and can provide advice on treatment where reversible elements are identified. In some patients surgical intervention may be a possibility. For others a hearing aid or other device may be beneficial and you would be referred onwards if this was potentially appropriate.
