What is the Menopause?

The menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, when periods stop permanently due to declining levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

It is officially diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can occur earlier — known as early or premature menopause — or later.

The years leading up to this point are called the perimenopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate and symptoms may start to appear.

What is the Perimenopause?

The perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to the menopause, when hormone levels — particularly oestrogen and progesterone — begin to fluctuate. This stage can last for several years and often starts in a woman’s 40s, although some may notice changes earlier.

During the perimenopause, periods may become irregular, lighter, or heavier, and many women experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, brain fog, and sleep disturbances.

While these changes are completely natural, they can also be disruptive. Understanding what is happening and receiving the right support can make a significant difference to your quality of life during this time.

What is the Perimenopause?

The perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. This can cause a wide variety of symptoms, such as:

Irregular or changing periods

Hot flushes and night sweats

Difficulty sleeping

Changes in mood, anxiety, or low confidence

Problems with concentration or memory

Vaginal dryness or discomfort

Changes in energy levels or sex drive

Every woman’s experience is different – some notice only minor changes, while others find symptoms affect daily life significantly.
